Bio of the Special Assistant to the Provost for WAC

Dr. Asao B. Inoue is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Composition in the English Department. Formerly, he Co-Directed the First Year Writing Program and continues to be the program’s Assessment Coordinator. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. from Washington State University. He was awarded the 2012 Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching. 

His research and scholarship investigates racial formations in writing assessments, both programmatic and classroom-based. He has published articles on validity theory and First Year Writing program assessment, as well as writing pedagogy. His recent co-edited collection (with Mya Poe, Penn State U), Race and Writing Assessment (Peter Lang Publishers) is the first collection that directly looks at racial formations in writing assessments and its scholarship. 

He is currently working on a manuscript that theorizes writing assessment as a technological environment that produces social formations, such as a racial, gender, and class formations and is under contract with Utah State University Press.
