2014 CSUPERB Faculty Research Award Recipient
Dr. Mamta Rawat, Biology
The committee, chaired by Dr. Adler-Moore (Cal Poly Pomona) writes, “Dr. Rawat's research has been very well supported since she became a faculty member at CSU Fresno. Her funding sources have included NSF, NIH, NASA, San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, and the California Agricultural Technology Institute. This range of support ($1,552,477) is a reflection of her diverse research programs, including investigations of thiols in medically important bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, how cyanobacteria cope with environmental challenges, bacterial resistance to deep space, and the metabolic capacity of bacteria for bioremediation. She is considered a major influence in the field of mycothiol research. She has published 30 papers and many of them have been in high impact journals including Biochemistry, Molecular Microbiology, Journal of Bacteriology, and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy with 10 of these papers having student co-authors. Her students have made many research presentations at scientific meetings and several of them have received awards for their presentations underscoring the quality of her research mentorship. She was also recently named a "National Academies Education Fellow in the Life Sciences" which recognizes her efforts to incorporate research and evidence-based approaches into her classroom teaching.  In summary, as one of her recommenders phrased it, ‘Dr. Rawat is an outstanding scholar and researcher who is an extremely insightful and contagiously enthusiastic individual with an excellent track record and a strong platform of both national and international research collaborations.” For more information please visit the website.
